happy birthday to meeeeeee!!!

aku dah tua....

hahaha, yah but still frigging gorgeous and obviously so full of shit bwahahaha...

I woke up on Wednesday to MB wishing me a Happy Birthday and Ashraf handing me a birthday card, so cute. Ok lah, not really handing me the card, more like I took it from his hands before he put it in his mouth, yeugh. I hate wet paper, makes my skin crawl.

Anyways, yeah the card was uber slick and cool and simple, very MB style. The best thing about having a graphic designer husband is getting a self-made card every year. That, and also because I want a self-made card every year, heh. But he's been making cards for me since the we were still going out, you know, zaman muda-muda dulu, skarang dah tua nak mampos.

MB took leave from work that day, so sweet, so we had a slow, relaxed breakfast together, nothing fancy though, just thought of spending a weekday yahoo-ing around while others are slogging at work. We did plan on going to the beach but it was raining like mad so in my mum's ustaz's words, "forget it about that." Kind of a bummer.

We did get out later in the day, nowhere special, just for a late lunch at Fish & Co where Ashraf charmed the socks off the wait staff there who eventually whisked him off for a tour of the restaurant leaving me and MB to eat our Seafood Platter and more importantly, drink my Sharkie Freeze - Ashraf likes grabbing cold drinks, especially if they come with straws, and the drink I ordered has both.

Then I went to do a spot of supermarket shopping for Sunday's feast and went to Polar before going home to buy the 'cheap cake' I had been hankering for for some time.

Why get a cake if I can bake one for myself? Firstly, it's my birthday, I don't wanna bake my own cake; secondly and more importantly, I love the taste of good ol' buttercream cakes. The type you can buy at heartland bakeries. You know, cheap cakes that some people will not touch, 'cos you know, it's cheap and to quote this ridiculous bugger, "I cannot eat cheap cakes like this, dunno why; cakes from Secret Recipe, you know, more expensive ones, those I can eat."

WTF?! Yeah, OK, to each his/ her own. Ika, don't snigger. It doesn't take much to please me I suppose, while I can appreciate exquisite stuff like macarons and chocolate truffles, simple things like those buttercream cake slices with funny neon icing squiggles on them can still make my day.

When I was growing up, I don't remember having a buttercream cake for my bithday except twice - my fifth birthday where I had my mom ice a bird on it (I was in Canary class in K1) and a Mickey Mouse shaped cake when I was...eh, was this Piko's cake instead? Aisey, not sure... we had a lot of fudge cakes growing up - my mum's signature chocolate fudge, I remember having durian fudge, pandan fudge... I also remembered having a blackforest cake for my eighth birthday. Most bizarre was my fourth birthday, when I got a pulut kuning 'cake' for my birthday. Now I can appreciate it lah, but which four-year-old would?! I mean, the knife got bloody stuck when I tried to cut it. I can still picture it...with little quail eggs and chilli flowers and my name lovingly spelled out by my mom diagonally across in green peas. Yup, my mom made all of our birthday cakes, buying cakes for birthdays was unheard of. Unfortunately, she's not a fan of buttercream so all the more I coveted it. I looked forward to classmates' birthdays 'cos most likely they'd have a store-bought buttercream cake, funny squiggles and all. Ohhh!! And wafer roses!! Those lemau and chewy wafer roses!!

So anyways, the only cake they had left in vanilla buttercream was the Power Rangers character cake. Erm, not for me lah. So I went for another one which was covered in vanilla buttercream and white chocolate chavings. Jadilah. I was a happy camper.

I decided to cut the cake in the kitchen with everyone around when we got home. Put Ashraf on my lap and proceeded to sing Happy Birthday to myself. I had not even reached the end of the second line when my little boy took a swipe at my cake and ended up with a fistful of buttercream. Man, he's fast. Needless to say, no more singing! Cut the cake already!

In the spirit of Muharram, I made a few resolutions, namely to be a better wife, mother, daughter and person. I will try to rekindle ties with certain people (eventhough it will be a bitch) and I resolve to cut my losses. The former will bring about the latter, hopefully, so Ika, don't snort. It's OK if it doesn't make sense, this warrants a post on its own, but not now, 'cos this is a happy post.

So yeah, Happy 29th to meeeeee!!! And thanks for the birthday wishes my dearies, you know who you are :)

I-want: A tagine!!! Silpat non-stick silicon baking mat, 10-inch Bundt pan, chocolate double-boiler, a kitchen island, preserved lemons, a freezer with an ice-cream maker in it, a big-ass fridge or chiller, assorted chopping boards, knife set, volunteers to help me eat my cake experiments, a garden like Monet's, fresh harbs growing in pots at my windowsill, a barbecue pit, a raintree and a treehouse to go with it, and oh yeah, world peace.
